Czech Republic reports 5,059 new COVID-19 cases - Czech Points

On Sunday, there were 5,059 confirmed cases of covid-19 in the Czech Republic, about 3,600 less than on Saturday. But this is the highest number of cases recorded on a Sunday increase since the beginning of the epidemic. There are currently over 100,000 people sick. The statistics added another 20 deaths from Sunday evening. A total of 1,422 people died with covid-19. According to the Ministry of Health, there were 3,519 people in hospitals.

Since the beginning of March, when the first cases of covid-19 appeared in the Czech Republic, about 174,000 people have been infected with coronavirus, and over 72,000 have recovered. Over the past week, with covid-19 cases breaking the record three times, labs have confirmed infection in nearly 57,000 people. The highest daily increase was recorded on Friday, at 11,105 cases.

Most of the infected have a mild course of the disease, but the number of hospitalized is growing. At the end of September, just over 1,000 people required hospital care, more than tripling in October. Of those hospitalized, 587 were in serious condition on Saturday, nine less than on Friday. Their number also tripled compared to September.

The number of deaths with proven covid-19 has also been rising in recent weeks. The total number of deaths more than doubled in October alone. Last week, the Ministry of Health had so far registered 380 deaths with covid, the most patients – 67 died on Friday, while the least deaths have occurred on Sunday – 33. However, these figures may change retroactively.

There have also been more tests in recent days, except for Mondays, there were always more than 30,000 on weekdays last week. On Friday, the laboratories evaluated a record of 38,524. On Saturday, they performed about 10,000 fewer tests, with 30.21 percent infected among those tested. This is the second-highest share since the beginning of the epidemic. According to the Minister of Health Roman Prymula, the Czech Republic needs to get a share below ten percent. The ministry will publish Sunday’s number of tests this evening.

The coronavirus has spread most significantly in the last seven days in the districts of Plzeň-sever and Zlín, where there are 756 and 754 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively. Plzeň-město follows it with 703 and Uherskohradišťsko with 697 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per week. Cheb is relatively the best with 184 new patients per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days.

Due to the unfavorable development of the coronavirus epidemic, stricter anti-epidemic measures have been in force throughout the Czech Republic since Wednesday. All schools from primary to tertiary have switched to distance learning, except for children with special needs. Restaurants, bars, clubs are closed, cultural and sports events are prohibited. A maximum of six people can gather. From today, restrictions also apply to weddings and funerals. They can only take place with a limited number of participants. According to government measures, there can be a maximum of 30.
