There were 10,725 new cases of covid-19 in the Czech Republic on Tuesday, which is about a third less than a week ago. The share of newly recorded infections in the number of tests performed fell from almost 40 percent to about 30.8 percent compared to last Tuesday. According to the Ministry of Health. Since the beginning of the covid-19 epidemic in the Czech Republic in March, almost 856,000 cases of this disease have been recorded. 13,656 infected died. According to the ministry, there were 79 deaths on Tuesday, but the office regularly increases the number of deaths in statistics retrospectively. In previous days, the daily death toll was mostly around 150 to 170. On Friday, January 8, according to updated data from the ministry, there were 180 deaths, which was the highest daily death toll since mid-November.

Last week on Wednesday, the highest daily increase in covid-19 cases since the onset of the epidemic, over 17,700, was also recorded. The share of positive cases was also very high, rising to 45.6 percent on Wednesday last week. The highest for the epidemic was on January 1, when it exceeded 52 percent. The number of hospitalized persons also grew the previous week. There were almost 7,500 people in hospitals with covid-19. The situation was then close to the record numbers from November 2020, when over 8,000 were hospitalized.

The disease is now the most widespread in the Hradec Králové region. Three of the five districts of the region now have one of the highest numbers of newly infected out of all Czech Republic regions. The most significant number of people infected in the Trutnov region has increased in the past seven days, with approximately 1,119 cases of covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants. In the Rychnov region, the weekly increase was 935 cases, and in the Náchod region 981. Among the regions with the highest increases in the number of infected in the Czech Republic were also the Opava region with 975 cases and the Cheb region with 900 cases.
