Czech COVID-19 cases break record for second day in a row - Czech Points

The coronavirus epidemic in the Czech Republic continues to grow. The country recorded a record number of new cases of covid-19 for the second day in a row, and the current number of infected is still the highest. Tests on Wednesday revealed 17,668 infected, which is 310 more than the previous maximum on Tuesday. The disease is now affected by 132,725 people in the country, with more than 122,000 of them in the autumn wave. According to the Ministry of Health, there were 7,143 people with covid in hospitals, about two hundred less than the previous day, of which 1,061 are in serious condition.

Laboratories performed about 37,000 PCR tests on Wednesday, with almost 48 percent positive. The day before, the infection was confirmed in 40 percent of the samples; last week, more than half of the PCR tests performed were positive. Antigen tests are positive in about five to seven percent because asymptomatic people usually take them.

Another 185 deaths were added to the statistics. A total of 12,621 people have already died with covid in the Czech Republic. On Tuesday, the ministry registers 152 victims, while on Wednesday, 84, the number of deaths usually increases retrospectively.

Since 1 March, when tests showed coronavirus infection in the first humans in the Czech Republic, 794,740 cases of covid-19 have been reported in the country, of which over 649,000, or almost 82 percent, have recovered in the meantime. Most people have a mild or asymptomatic course, and more than five percent of hospitals are now positive.

Experts expect that the number of hospitalized and patients requiring intensive care will continue to grow and the daily increase in those infected. Improvements are expected next week at the earliest. Czechia is now in the worst, fifth degree of the anti-epidemic PES system, and the government will deal with the situation today. The epidemic PES index fell by two points to 84 points today. From Wednesday, it takes into account the proportion of patients with covid-19 who report their infection before admission to the hospital, while the positivity of the tests is no longer included in the score.

The number of infected people in the northeast of Bohemia has grown most significantly in recent days. In Hradec Králové, there have been approximately 1,091 cases of the disease per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days, 978 in the Rychnov region and 968 in the Trutnov region.
